SDMed organises a major festival event in September-October, 2013, in Athens, entitled EchoPolis- Days of Sound : “Sounds, Noise and Music in re-thinking sustainable city and the eco-neighborhoods”. The “EchoPolis-Days of Sound”Event, being the first edition of a series of events to be held in cities all over the Mediterranean and the Balkans will focus on the objective "Re-inventing emotions in the City" and to the consideration of environmental sounds as a 'resource' rather than a 'waste'.

The “EchoPolis” International Soundscape Award

"How do we make the shift from noise abatement, which is undoubtedly necessary, to a lively soundscape which we all enjoy and to which we all contribute?" Andres Bosshard, sonic artist

The "SDMed Observation, Planning and Eco-innovation Society" is teaming up with the Interdisciplinary Team of Research and Studies on Tourism of the University Paris I- Panthéon-Sorbonne to raise awareness about the emotional and mainly sound dimension of cities and neighborhoods and how this can contribute to the improvement of urban soundscapes for enhancing city attractiveness and stimulate local wealth based on valorization of sound related territorial capital and identity.The organisers intend to reward relevant state or cities’ initiatives that help either reduce excessive noise in cities,in urban developments of all scales, in historical sites and neighborhoods or use soundscapes and music to make them more attractive for their inhabitants and their visitors. Any product, campaign, innovation or scheme offering a creative solution for urban development related soundscapes can be nominated for the Award.

Eligibility Criteria

Submissions may be received for any activity, work or initiative in the field of urban soundscapes that was carried out up to 31st of December 2012.The organisers understand that this type of work takes time to design and implement and, most importantly, to review and measure impact.If the project or initiative you wish to submit has taken place in a past period, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Judging Criteria

Your submission should describe:

  • The nature of the project and the type of noise or problem
  • The approach taken to understanding the issue or problem
  • A description of the solution or initiative
  • Evidence of the impact and result of the solution or initiative

Submissions will also be judged on the degree to which they demonstrate:

  • Community involvement      
  • Sound and noise education
  • Creative solutions
  • Cost effectiveness
  • Potential for replication in other cities or urban developments
  • Combination with eco-innovation (i.e in realized econeighborhoods)
  • Multidisciplinarity of the project : team composed by architects, engineers, artists, planners, sound designers,inhabitants..etc.

How to submit your entry

Step 1: Read through the Submission Criteria and guidelines above.

Step 2: Read the guidance on Judging Criteria set out above to give yourselves the best chance of winning the award.

Please note that submissions should comprise a maximum of four A4 pages when printed, although you may refer to additional internet links to support your application, should judges wish to access supplementary information. Remember to include your full contact details.

Step 4: The deadline for submissions is the 30th of July  2013 at 22.00 Central European Time (CET).

Step 5: You will receive a confirmation of receipt of your submission by email. Where necessary, the SDMed Observation Society will contact you to clarify points or request further information to support your submission before the judging panel reviews all submissions.

Step 6: Pencil the Awards Ceremony date in your diary – 2nd October  2013. The Awards Ceremony is held in the “Michalis Cacoyannis Foundation” in Athens from 7.30 – 10.00 pm.

Judging and results

Shortlisted teams will be notified in September 2013 and invited to attend the EchoPolis Intarnational Soundscape Awards Ceremony on 2nd October 2013, when the winners will be announced and the awards presented.
